Naaran

Naaran is an ancient synagogue with ruins located near Jericho, where preserved mosaic flooring features geometric patterns and partially erased zodiac designs. The site sits in an archaeological area northwest of central Jericho and contains remains from the Byzantine period.

An excavation in 1918 uncovered the synagogue's foundations when a shell explosion during World War I exposed sections of the mosaic flooring. This discovery revealed that the site served as an important community center during the Byzantine period.

The mosaic displays traces of deliberate modifications that reflect the religious beliefs of the community who worshiped here. These alterations to the original design reveal how spiritual practices shaped daily life in ancient times.

The site lies a short distance northwest of Jericho and can be found with basic directions. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and bring water, as the area is exposed and sun-drenched.

The mosaic floor displays Hebrew and Aramaic inscriptions that offer insight into the languages spoken by the community. These texts and the artistic modifications to the design demonstrate how religious beliefs found expression through visual art.
