Putna-Vrancea Natural Park, Protected mountain area in Vrancea County, Romania.
Putna-Vrancea Natural Park is a protected area in the Carpathian mountains of Vrancea County, Romania, covering forested slopes, gorges, waterfalls, and high-altitude pastures. The terrain rises from river valleys to open mountain ridges, giving the park a varied landscape across its different zones.
The park was established by government decision in 2004 and formally designated as a protected area the following year. The move recognized decades of scientific observation of the mountain flora and fauna in this part of the Carpathians.
The villages around the park are known for woodworking, and this tradition is still visible today in carved gates, wooden fences, and timber buildings at the park's edge. Walking through these settlements gives a clear sense of how local craftsmanship shapes everyday life in the area.
The park has nine marked trails of varying difficulty, all accessible from surrounding villages. A summer visit makes it easier to reach the higher sections, as the upper trails can be snow-covered or icy in colder months.
The park is home to one of Romania's largest trout hatcheries, which raises fish that are released into local rivers to support both fishing and river health. This makes the park one of the few protected areas in the country where active fish production runs alongside wildlife conservation.
