Castra Angustia

Castra Angustia is a Roman military fort in Brețcu that served as a fortified installation for the Roman army. The remains show the outlines of watchtowers and defensive walls that once structured the site.

The fort was established in the 2nd century and controlled an important mountain pass for Roman military presence. It remained occupied for several centuries before Roman rule in the region came to an end.

Archaeological excavations since 1877 have uncovered Roman coins, military stamps on bricks, and a bronze military diploma from 92 AD.

The site sits in a wooded area and requires careful planning before visiting due to its remote location. Sturdy footwear and local guidance are helpful for finding and exploring the remains.

A military diploma from the 1st century was unearthed here, documenting the discharge of a Roman soldier after his service. This artifact reveals personal details about the life of an ordinary soldier in the ancient world.
