Leányvár, Medieval castle ruin in Florești, Romania.
Leányvár is a castle ruin located on elevated ground near Florești in Transylvania, featuring stone walls from multiple periods. The remaining structures show the typical layout of a hilltop fortress with steep sides and original access points.
The fortress was built in medieval times as part of Transylvania's defense network and was reinforced and rebuilt over generations. It lost its military purpose as regional conditions changed and was eventually abandoned.
The ruins display building techniques that reveal how medieval inhabitants adapted their construction methods to the hilltop location. Walking through the site, you notice how the walls were reinforced in sections over time to meet changing needs.
The site is reachable on foot from Florești center, with clear paths leading to the hilltop and no special equipment needed. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and surfaces can be slippery in wet weather.
The name comes from a local tradition where women from surrounding villages helped maintain and defend the walls during periods of relative peace. This role of the female residents is part of regional memory and makes the fortress a distinctive symbol.
