Žiča, Serbian Orthodox monastery in Kraljevo, Serbia
The red-colored religious complex includes the Church of the Holy Dormition, constructed with stone and brick in medieval Serbian architectural style.
Founded in 1208 by Stefan the First-Crowned and Saint Sava, Žiča served as the first seat of the independent Serbian Orthodox Church from 1219.
The monastery walls contain three layers of frescoes from different periods, including portraits of King Stefan and his son Radoslav from the 14th century.
The monastery maintains regular visiting hours and welcomes both religious pilgrims and historical researchers interested in medieval Serbian architecture.
Serbian medieval kings received their official coronation and sacred anointment exclusively in this monastery to validate their royal authority.
