Gradac Monastery, Medieval Orthodox monastery in Raska region, Serbia
Gradac Monastery is an Orthodox monastery from the Middle Ages located in the Raska region, sitting on a raised plateau above the Gradacka River. The complex consists of two churches, monastic buildings, and gardens nestled among the forested slopes of Mount Golija.
The monastery was founded between 1277 and 1282 and became an important center in Serbian religious history. Its founder was buried within the compound after her death in 1314.
The name comes from the nearby Gradacka River, reflecting how the location shaped its identity. Visitors can see how nuns today continue traditions of craft and care through their work with bees and sacred art.
The site is reached by a path that climbs from the village of Gradac, offering views as you walk up the hillside. Wear sturdy shoes since the approach involves rural terrain and can be steep in places.
The main church features an octagonal dome with eight large windows, an unusual design choice for its time. This blend of Serbian Raska and Gothic elements made the building stand out during the medieval period.
