Grdelička klisura, Canyon in southeastern Serbia
Grdelička klisura is a deep gorge in southeastern Serbia where towering rock walls rise steeply above the river flowing through it. The narrow passage cuts through the landscape with dramatic vertical cliffs and curved passages that create an imposing natural corridor.
The gorge was carved over millions of years as the river eroded through the rock layers, creating this natural passageway. In the 20th century it became a crucial transport corridor, and military conflict in the region left its mark on the infrastructure passing through it.
The villages dotting the canyon maintain local customs through traditional crafts and building styles that reflect generations of settlement in this narrow passage.
The main route through the canyon is a modern highway with two tunnels that connect the Vranje and Leskovac areas. Drivers pass through on this direct route with good views from the road, though the path includes sharp turns and elevation changes.
The canyon displays some of the most visible erosion patterns in the region, carved into its rock faces by water and mountain forces over time. Visitors can observe how these water-worn features have shaped the sheer walls into dramatic and unusual formations.
