The Vlasina Outstanding Natural Landscape is a high-altitude region in southeastern Serbia centered on a large lake above 1200 meters (3900 feet) surrounded by forests and peat islands. The water shifts in color from gray-blue to deeper blue depending on location and time of day, with boggy shores and floating peat islands creating a distinctive appearance.
The area gained international protection status as a significant natural reserve, listed as a Ramsar wetland site in 2007. This recognition reflects the region's long-standing importance as a place where diverse life forms and natural systems have developed and been valued.
The area holds deep meaning for local communities who have lived close to these waters and forests for generations. Fishing and time spent in nature remain central to how people connect with and use this landscape.
The best way to explore this place is on foot through the forests and around the lake shores, where various paths lead to different parts of the landscape. The area holds more than 950 plant species, including rare species like the moonwort rosette and boreal birch that survive only in isolated mountain regions. These plants are scarce worldwide and make this place valuable for scientists studying how ecosystems function in harsh conditions.
