Музей йогурта

The Yogurt Museum occupies a two-story building in the center of Studen Izvor and displays exhibits about how Bulgarian yogurt is produced and fermented. The rooms show traditional production techniques and equipment that have been used for generations.

Dr. Stamen Grigorov, a scientist from Sofia, identified the microorganism responsible for yogurt fermentation as Lactobacillus bulgaricus during his research. This scientific discovery made Bulgaria the birthplace of modern yogurt production.

The museum displays household items and furnishings from 19th century Bulgarian homes, illustrating how dairy making was central to local life and tradition. These exhibits show how yogurt production shaped daily routines and eating habits in this region.

The museum is easy to access with clear signage and rooms that are simple to navigate. Visitors should plan for about 1 to 2 hours to comfortably view the exhibits.

This is the only museum of its kind in the world dedicated entirely to the history and science of yogurt. It documents not only the chemical discovery but also the handmade methods that families in this region passed down through generations.
