Aleksandrovačko Jezero, meer in Servië
Aleksandrovačko Jezero is a reservoir near Vranje created over 50 years ago for irrigation purposes in surrounding agricultural areas. The body of water is surrounded by local landscape and serves as a geographical landmark, though current water quality issues limit its recreational use.
The reservoir was built in the 1970s as an artificial impoundment to irrigate fruit orchards and vegetable fields in surrounding villages. After the original operator failed, the municipality of Vranje took control and has attempted multiple restoration efforts over the decades.
The name reflects the area's local history and heritage. Today, the reservoir serves mainly as a walking destination and nature observation spot, though traditional uses like fishing have been paused.
The reservoir is currently closed to public swimming and fishing due to water quality concerns. Visitors can walk around the perimeter and observe the landscape, but should avoid direct contact with the water and respect posted restrictions.
Researchers discovered dangerous cyanobacteria and blue-green algae strains in the water that can release toxins into the air. This finding prompted local authorities to conduct detailed water studies and plan comprehensive remediation efforts.
