Lake Onega, Lake in northwestern Russia

Lake Onega extends across 9,720 square kilometers with 1,650 islands, making it the second largest lake in Europe after Lake Ladoga.

The lake formed approximately 12,000 years ago through glacial movements during the last Ice Age, shaping its current elongated structure.

The lake shores contain 1,200 petroglyphs from the 4th-2nd millennia BC, while Kizhi Island features wooden churches with multiple domes.

The lake connects to the Baltic Sea, White Sea, and Volga River through canals, serving as a major transportation route for domestic and international trade.

The water temperature variations between coastal and open areas create distinct circulation patterns, affecting wave formation and ice coverage periods.
