Volchikhinskoye Vodokhranilishche, Protected water reservoir near Yekaterinburg, Russia.
Volchikhinskoye Vodokhranilishche is a protected drinking water reservoir on the Chusovaya River, located west of Yekaterinburg in Russia. Several islands break up its surface, and the shores are lined with stretches of sandy beach and pine and birch forest.
The reservoir was built in 1944 to supply drinking water to Yekaterinburg as the city grew rapidly during the war years. The dam was constructed on the Chusovaya River, which had long served communities in the Ural region.
This protected water body serves local communities as a recreation destination and essential water supply. The forested shores and islands create a natural setting where visitors can experience outdoor activities alongside the reservoir's vital role for the region.
The reservoir is easiest to reach by car or by train from Yekaterinburg, and several recreation bases along the shore offer a base for a stay. The warmer months are the best time to visit, when swimming and spending time outdoors along the beaches is comfortable.
Although the reservoir is a protected source of drinking water for the region, some of its sandy beaches have designated naturist areas. A few of the islands also carry their own names, including Zmeinyi, which translates to Snake Island.
