Museum of Vasily Chapayev in Cheboksary, Soviet military museum in Cheboksary, Russia
The Museum of Vasily Chapayev is a Soviet military museum in Cheboksary shaped to resemble an unfolded banner. Its exterior walls carry a large copper sculptural group of mounted cavalry and five bas-relief portraits carved into the facade.
The museum was founded in 1974 to honor a Russian Civil War commander who had previously earned three Crosses of St. George in World War I. A restored wooden house where he once lived, dating from the late 1800s, stands next to the main building.
The museum honors a Civil War commander who became a folk hero in the region, celebrated in songs and films. Inside, colored crystal stained glass windows show scenes from the history of the Red Army.
The entrance is on Prospekt Lenina, and it is worth checking opening hours in advance since the museum may close on public holidays. The wooden house next door is part of the site and can be visited separately.
The wooden house next to the main building still holds original family objects from the 1800s, giving a direct sense of daily life at that time. It is one of the few surviving residential buildings of its kind in the city.
