Presentation Cathedral, Cheboksary, Orthodox cathedral in Cheboksary, Russia.
The Presentation Cathedral in Cheboksary is a Russian Orthodox church with white stone walls, several gilded domes, and carved decorative elements on its facade. It stands in the historic center of the city, clearly visible from the bay of the Volga reservoir.
The church was founded in the 16th century during the reign of Ivan the Terrible, shortly after the Chuvash region came under Russian rule. It was rebuilt and expanded several times over the following centuries.
The cathedral is one of the most visited Orthodox churches in the city, especially during Easter and other major religious feasts. Inside, visitors can see iconostases and wall paintings that follow the conventions of Russian Orthodox art.
Visitors are expected to dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, as the site is an active place of worship. Opening times can vary depending on the liturgical calendar, so it is worth checking before you go.
During the Soviet period, the cathedral was closed and repurposed before being returned to religious use after the Soviet Union collapsed. Traces of that transformation can still be noticed in parts of the building's interior.
