The museum opened on September 5, 2001, as part of Chess City, a complex built in 1998 under Kirsan Ilyumzhinov's leadership of Kalmykia.

Guided tours introduce visitors to the permanent collection, which includes rare chess publications, strategic documents, and competition records from past tournaments.
The museum resides in Chess City, a dedicated district that cost 50 million dollars to construct for hosting the 33rd Chess Olympiad.
