Rzhevskaya Prison is a fortified stone complex in the center of Rzhev featuring high walls, guard towers, and thick brick construction typical of 18th-century penal architecture. The layout remains organized around inner courtyards with defensive features still visible in its current form.
Catherine II ordered construction of this fortress-prison in 1768 to detain runaway serfs from surrounding estates in the region. The facility underwent reconstruction after World War II damage and later transformed into a pre-trial detention center.
The Znamenskaya Church was built within the prison grounds and created a place where both detainees and guards could participate in religious services. Today, visitors can observe how this chapel functioned as part of daily institutional life.
The complex is located centrally in the city and can be reached on foot with clear pathways around the exterior. Plan for about 2 hours to walk through the main structures and courtyards at a comfortable pace.
After World War II damage, workers repaired the damaged walls and structures using bricks salvaged from demolished churches in the region. This reuse of materials shows how the facility adapted to rebuild itself during a difficult period.
