Onezhskoye Pomorye National Park, National park on Onega Peninsula, Russia
Onezhskoye Pomorye National Park is a large protected area in the northern taiga with forests, coastal lands, and White Sea shorelines. The region covers vast terrain with numerous streams, lakes, and the harsh conditions of the Arctic environment.
The idea for creating this national park began in the 1990s to protect the region's unique nature. After years of planning and boundary discussions, it was officially established in 2013.
The Pomor people, a maritime community, have kept their traditional ways of life visible in how they work and build along the coast. Wooden houses and fishing practices shape the landscape, showing how local residents have lived with the sea for generations.
The park requires advance permits from authorities before visiting. Access is challenging year-round, though summer months offer more options for traveling to and within the area.
Freshwater streams here are home to the European pearl mussel, a rare animal sensitive to water quality. Scientists consider this mussel an important indicator of a healthy aquatic environment.
