Преображенский форштадт, Historic district in Tsentralny District, Russia
Preobrazhensky Forstadt is a historic district in Tsentralny District featuring buildings made of wood and clay that date from different periods of the area's development. The neighborhood stretches along the northern portion of the district, with structures that reflect the evolution of construction practices over time.
The district began in 1601 as a settlement beyond the fortress walls between the Volga River and Tsaritsa River. It gradually developed into a working community of craftsmen, boat builders, and traders who served the city.
Merchants and craftsmen established workshops for cooperage and blacksmithing in the district, while fishermen developed their trade along the riverside.
Walking through the district gives you the best sense of its layout and allows you to notice details on individual buildings. Daytime visits work well for observing the structures and their features.
The streets received names of imperial women during the 1830s and 1840s, including Eleninskaya, Varvarinskaya, and Ekaterininskaya. This naming practice reflected ties to the royal family during a period of urban expansion.
