Olkhovaya, Metro station in Sosenskoye Settlement, Moscow, Russia
Olkhovaya is a metro station in the Sosenskoye Settlement district, on the southeastern edge of Moscow, served by the Sokolnicheskaya line. The station has a single-level layout with white relief-tiled walls and a direct connection to a large parking facility designed for commuters.
The station opened in 2019 as part of an extension of the Sokolnicheskaya line that brought metro service into the southeastern outskirts of Moscow for the first time. The expansion was driven by the growth of new residential areas in that part of the city.
The name Olkhovaya comes from the Russian word for alder, a tree that once grew widely in this part of Moscow. Amber-toned mosaics and ceiling lights shaped after winged alder seeds carry this reference through the whole station.
The station is right next to Kaluzhskoe Shosse highway, making it easy to reach by car from the south side of the city. Visitors arriving by metro should allow extra time since the area is on the outer edge of the network and connections to other lines require a longer ride.
The white wall tiles are not flat but protrude at varying angles, which causes shadows to shift and change as the lighting conditions in the station vary across the day. This effect was not designed as a separate art installation but comes simply from the way the surface was built.
