The monument was erected in 1853 to mark the centenary of Platov's birth. It was removed in 1923 but restored in 1993 with a new sculpture replacing the original.
The inscription honors Ataman Count Platov for his military service and expresses the gratitude of Don residents. His role as a prominent Cossack leader remains significant in the region's sense of identity.
The monument is located in front of the Ataman Palace in the city center and is easily accessible on foot. The surrounding area offers plenty of space to view the statue from different angles.
Swedish artist Karl Mazer created a painting documenting the inauguration ceremony of the original monument. The ceremony was notable for including 101 artillery salutes in honor of the occasion.
