Saints Cosmas and Damian church, Orthodox church in Saint Petersburg, Russia
Saints Cosmas and Damian church is a stone building with a Byzantine-style dome and bell tower standing at the intersection of Kirochnaya Street and Voskresensky Prospect in Saint Petersburg. Its interior features a carved iconostasis, paintings by artist V.V. Zabolotsky, and military objects reflecting its connection to the armed forces.
A wooden church was built in 1759 to serve the Artillery Hospital, but it burned down in 1854. A new stone structure replaced it at the same location and was redesigned in 1885-1886 by architect Modest Ivanov.
The church served the military community, particularly the Sapper Battalion, whose presence shaped its decoration and purpose over many decades. Religious life here was intertwined with military tradition and commemoration.
The church is located at a street corner, making it easy to find and access while walking through the neighborhood. Its position at a busy intersection means it is clearly visible from multiple directions.
A bronze eagle monument on a granite stone at the church grounds commemorates fallen sappers and was relocated from Peterhof to this location in 1899. This memorial is an easy detail to miss when visiting the site.
