Zaharievskaya, 23, Egyptian Revival residential building in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Zaharievskaya 23, known as the Egyptian House, is a residential building in Saint Petersburg that incorporates Egyptian design elements into its facade. The structure displays characteristic columnar forms and intricately worked ornamental decorations across its outer walls.
Architect Mykolas Songaila designed this structure in the 19th century when Egyptian Revival style spread across Europe following Napoleon's campaign in Egypt. This architectural fashion also reached Russia and shaped the appearance of several city buildings from that era.
The building reflects a moment when Russian architects embraced European style movements and incorporated them into their own residential designs. Its exterior shows how exotic aesthetics merged with local building traditions to create something entirely new.
The building is located in a residential neighborhood of the city and can be viewed from the exterior to appreciate its distinctive facade. The best way to see it is to take time viewing the column and ornament details closely from street level.
The building is one of the few known examples of Egyptian style architecture in a northern city with a cool climate. It shows how design trends from southern lands were transferred into completely different geographic and climate contexts.
