The Church of the Holy Mandylion features baroque architecture with a rectangular structure and stands one block from the Moscow Kremlin on Nikolskaya Street.
The cathedral, initially constructed in 1660, underwent major reconstructions in 1717-1720 and 1742 while maintaining its religious significance within the Zaikonospassky Monastery complex.
From 1687 to 1814, the monastery grounds contained the Slavic Greek Latin Academy, the first higher education institution in Russia, where Mikhail Lomonosov studied.
Visitors can find the cathedral at Nikolskaya Street 7-9, Building 3, with regular religious services held under the Moscow Eparchy administration.
The monastery received its name from its location near medieval icon shops, with 'Zaikonospassky' translating to 'the Savior behind the icon shops'.
