Gate Church

The Gate Church is a neoclassical building that serves as the entrance to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra and features white walls with Doric pilasters throughout. The structure includes a low dome and ornate decorative details that emphasize its classical proportions.

The building was designed by architect Ivan Starov beginning in 1784 and completed in 1786 as part of the monastery entrance complex. Its construction marked an important development in shaping the monastery complex during the late 1700s.

The church displays Russian Orthodox traditions through its interior collection of religious paintings and sculptures. These artworks came from a private chapel and reflect the spiritual artistic practices of the period.

Visitors can enter the church from Nevsky Prospect and may attend regular religious services conducted in Russian. It is helpful to wear respectful clothing and be aware of active services when exploring the interior.

From 1904 to 1918, the building housed a Latvian parish that allowed worshippers to conduct services in the Latvian language. This uncommon use by the Baltic community adds an unexpected chapter to the site's religious story.
