The site originally held a monastery dedicated to the Apostle James dating back to the 16th century, with southern gates still visible today. The current stone church was built in 1769 with community support, a summer chapel was added later, and the bell tower was consecrated in 1783.
The church serves as a spiritual center where visitors can observe local prayer practices and festive celebrations on major religious holidays.
