The Church of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Mother of God in Yakovlevsky is a red-brick church building constructed in 1769 with a distinctive five-domed roof and a tall multi-tiered bell tower. Inside, the church contains three altars dedicated to the Annunciation, the Apostle James, and the Burning Bush icon, along with original painted icons and religious furnishings that have survived over two centuries.
The site originally held a monastery dedicated to the Apostle James dating back to the 16th century, with southern gates still visible today. The current stone church was built in 1769 with community support, a summer chapel was added later, and the bell tower was consecrated in 1783.
The church serves as a spiritual center where visitors can observe local prayer practices and festive celebrations on major religious holidays. People light candles, participate in processions around the neighborhood, and gather here to mark important life events, creating a living tradition that connects faith to daily community life.
The church is accessible year-round and welcomes visitors daily to view its original painted icons and the reliquaries of Saint Nikolai Lyubomudrov installed in the early 2000s. A small shop near the entrance sells candles and religious items, and the bell tower can be climbed to view the surrounding city from above.
According to local legend, a holy cross was discovered buried at this site after a traveling crusader received a vision revealing where to dig. This miraculous finding in the 13th century became the spiritual foundation of the place and led to the construction of a chapel that still draws pilgrims seeking blessings today.
