Stockholm Music Museum, Music and theatre museum in Östermalm, Stockholm, Sweden
The Stockholm Music Museum is a music and theatre museum in Östermalm that houses around 5,500 musical instruments, primarily focused on Western classical music and Scandinavian folk traditions. The collection also includes stage costumes, masks, and marionettes spanning different periods and styles.
The museum grew from an exhibition of theatre and music shown at Stockholm's art and industry fair in 1899, opening to visitors in 1901. Over the following decades, the collection expanded through purchases and donations, becoming a major archive of musical and theatrical traditions in the Nordic region.
The collection displays musical instruments from Scandinavia and Western Europe, showing how people in this region made and played music across different times. Visitors can see how these traditions shaped the way communities gathered and celebrated together.
The museum is located at Sibyllegatan 2 in an older industrial building and is easily accessible by public transport. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the exhibitions span several floors with stairs between levels.
The building was originally the Crown Bakery, which baked bread for Swedish armed forces from the 1640s until 1958. Today this former production space houses one of the Nordic region's largest collections of musical instruments and theatrical objects.
