Petersenska huset, Palace in Gamla Stan, Stockholm, Sweden
Petersenska Huset is a townhouse in Gamla Stan featuring Dutch Baroque style with carved stone ornaments across its front wall. The three-story building displays large windows and balanced proportions typical of homes built for the wealthy during this period.
The building was constructed between 1645 and 1659 according to designs by architect Christian Julius Döteber. Later modifications by architect Johan Erik Söderlund changed parts of the structure and shaped its current appearance.
The house takes its name from merchant Peter Olofsson, whose family shaped its character during the 1600s. The way it was built reflects how wealthy Stockholm residents looked to foreign design ideas.
The building can be viewed from the street throughout the year as you walk through the narrow lanes of Gamla Stan. The best view of the front facade and its details is from the street directly in front of the entrance.
The house was originally called Piper Palace before being renamed after its later owning family. This name change tracks the shift between wealthy families who lived there across the centuries.
