Schönfeldtska huset, 17th century building in Gamla Stan, Stockholm, Sweden
Schönfeldtska huset is a 17th-century stone building in Gamla Stan with columns framing its entrance and wrought-iron emblems adorning the facade overlooking Stora Nygatan. The structure currently houses Jensen Gymnasium Södra, with its grand hall serving as a venue for conferences and events.
Built around 1630 for Lennart Torstensson, this structure was among the first buildings erected after the Great Fire of 1625 destroyed much of Stockholm. Architect Jean de la Vallée later modified the building, blending French design elements with local construction traditions.
The building served as the headquarters of the Swedish Moderate Party until 2017, marking its role in the country's political history.
The building is accessible to visitors and located on a main street in Gamla Stan, making it easy to include in a walking tour of the historic quarter. You can view the exterior stonework and architectural details from the street without needing to enter.
The building showcases a rare blend of French classical design and Swedish building traditions that architect Jean de la Vallée created during renovation. This combination is uncommon in the old town and reflects the cultural exchange between France and Scandinavia during that era.
