Mälartorget, Pedestrian square in Gamla stan, Sweden
Mälartorget is a paved public square located in the western section of Gamla stan, Stockholm's old town district. The plaza sits along the Lake Mälaren waterfront and is bordered by historic buildings that define its medieval appearance.
This square emerged in the middle of the 19th century through land-filling operations connected to harbor development. It functioned as a transfer point for agricultural goods transported across the lake from surrounding regions.
The bronze sculpture 'Familjen' by Pye Engström displays figures of a family whose poses can be adjusted by visitors. The work invites people to interact with the bronze figures and reposition them freely.
The exit of Gamla stan metro station opens directly onto this square, providing easy access to the surrounding streets. Visitors can explore the various lanes of the old town from here or walk down to the waterfront.
This location was formerly called Flugmötet because it served as a collection point for materials used in gunpowder production. This industrial past contrasts sharply with the peaceful character the place has today.
