Sjösås nya kyrka, Ecclesiastical complex in Viås, Sweden
Sjösås nya kyrka is an ecclesiastical complex in Viås with a tall pointed tower rising above gray stone walls finished in white plaster. The site includes the main church building, a cemetery, and auxiliary structures that form a complete architectural ensemble.
Built between 1860 and 1865 based on architect Carl-Gustaf Blom-Carlsson's designs, the church replaced an older medieval building that had become too small for the growing parish. Its construction reflected the shift that made Viås the center of community life.
The church served as a social gathering place for the Sjösås parish community, shaping how people in the area lived and connected. Visitors came together not just for worship but also to meet and share news.
You can view the exterior and access a digital virtual tour to explore the interior and original architecture. It is helpful to check the current condition beforehand, as the building experienced a significant fire in September 2022.
A 13th-century sandstone baptismal font came from the earlier church and is one of the site's oldest objects. A late 15th-century triumphal crucifix also survived the fire, making these two pieces valuable witnesses to centuries of the church's story.
