Sätraskogen, Nature reserve in Stockholm, Sweden
Sätraskogen is a nature reserve in Stockholm covering about 256 hectares of mixed forest with open meadows, oak-covered slopes, and ancient fir trees. The landscape stretches along Lake Mälaren's shoreline and features diverse woodland types alongside the waterfront.
The area received protected status in 2006 when Swedish authorities designated it as a nature reserve to safeguard the natural environment within Stockholm. This protection ensured the forest and waterfront would be preserved from development.
Two traditional swimming beaches, Mälarhöjdsbadet and Sätra strandbadet, are gathering places where locals spend their summer days swimming and socializing. These beaches define how the community uses the waterfront throughout the warm months.
Several walking paths connect different parts of the reserve stretching from Liljeholmen to Vårberg along the waterfront. Exploring on foot with sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after rain when the ground can be muddy.
The reserve contains one of Stockholm's few remaining natural stream ravines where Sätraån flows from the north down to Lake Mälaren. Over time, this waterway carved a distinctive geological feature through the surrounding landscape.
