Saint George and the Dragon replica at Köpmantorget

This bronze and granite sculpture portrays a mounted warrior in combat with a dragon while a female figure watches nearby. The work stands in Gamla stan's central square, surrounded by medieval buildings and serving as a focal point for visitors exploring the old town.

An artist created this replica in the early 1900s, copying a wooden sculpture that dated from the 1490s. The original work still stands inside a nearby cathedral, having inspired this modern bronze version on the square.

The scene shows a religious story of a warrior defeating a fearsome creature, a tale that has attracted people to this square for centuries. Visitors often pause here to reflect on the legend's meaning across different cultures.

The statue stands in the middle of the square and is easily reached on foot, though narrow cobblestone lanes can get crowded at busy times. Early morning or late afternoon tend to offer the clearest views and fewer visitors around the work.

The sculptor chose bronze and granite instead of wood like the medieval original, and replaced the elk antlers that adorned the dragon in the first version with cast metal features. This blend of modern materials with an ancient subject creates an unexpected dialogue between old and new.
