Port of Slite, Commercial port on northeast coast of Gotland Island, Sweden
The port of Slite is a commercial port on the northeast coast of Gotland Island, with several berths and water depths ranging from 6.4 to 7.6 meters (21 to 25 feet). It accommodates vessels up to 150 meters in length and handles exports of grain, timber, and cement as well as imports of oil, fertilizer, and general cargo.
The port was developed in the late 1800s to support regional growth and trade. Between 1902 and 1953, a railway extending 33 kilometers to the inland town of Roma connected the port and transported local products across the island.
The port is closely tied to the cement industry that defines the economic character of northeast Gotland. Walking along the waterfront, you notice how industrial operations shape daily life and connect the community to global trade.
You can walk around the harbor area and watch vessel movements and loading operations from public viewpoints along the waterfront. Wear sturdy shoes since the docks and surrounding surfaces are uneven and can become slippery when wet.
Nearby lies the Slite archipelago featuring distinctive rock formations on Asunden island and the Karlsvärd Fortress on Enholmen island. These protected islands offer visitors a chance to explore a varied coastal landscape that extends beyond the industrial port area.
