Kranji War Cemetery, Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery in Sungei Kadut, Singapore
Kranji War Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in Sungei Kadut, Singapore, where more than 4,000 soldiers are buried. The white headstones stand in straight rows across open green ground, all following the same uniform design.
After Japan's surrender in 1945, remains from scattered burial sites across Singapore were brought together at this location to form a permanent resting place. Over time, it became the main memorial site for those who died in the region during the war.
Families and visitors from many countries come here to pay their respects, and the grounds feel quiet and respectful throughout the day. The inscriptions on the headstones are written in several languages, reflecting the wide range of nations that sent soldiers to fight in this region.
The cemetery is open every day and can be visited freely on foot, with no need to book in advance. Comfortable shoes are a good idea, as the rows of graves cover a large area and walking the full grounds takes time.
The Singapore Memorial, located within the cemetery grounds, has granite columns carved with the names of around 24,000 soldiers whose graves have never been found. This means the memorial holds the names of far more people than the number of graves in the ground around it.
