Read Bridge, Pedestrian bridge at Clarke Quay, Singapore
The beam-structured Read Bridge spans across the Singapore River, connecting Clarke Quay with the Swissôtel Merchant Court area.
Construction of Read Bridge began in 1881 to replace Merchant Bridge, concluding with an official opening ceremony by Governor Cecil Clementi Smith in 1889.
The structure served as a gathering place for Teochew community members, including storytellers and street opera performers through the 1960s.
The bridge provides continuous access for pedestrians and cyclists, with direct connections to riverside restaurants and entertainment venues at Clarke Quay.
Local communities use different names for the structure, including Jembatan Kampong Melaka in Malay and Kam-kong ma-la-kah kio in Hokkien.
