Thammasat University, Public research university in Bangkok, Thailand.
Thammasat University is a public research university in Bangkok, Thailand, offering programs in law, social sciences, business and other fields. The institution operates several locations across the capital and beyond, including a historic main campus on the riverfront next to the Grand Palace.
The institution was founded in 1934 by Pridi Banomyong as the University of Moral and Political Sciences to teach law and government. The original site at Tha Phra Chan pier remained a center for academic and political debate throughout the upheavals of the 20th century.
The Language Institute of Thammasat University strengthens English proficiency among students while maintaining connections to Thai educational traditions.
The main campus buildings sit on the east bank of the Chao Phraya between the Royal Palace and Wat Pho, reachable by ferries to Tha Chang pier. The grounds are open during the day, though some lecture halls and libraries have limited access outside term time.
The Dome, a round assembly hall by the river, has hosted numerous student protests and remains a symbol of political engagement in Thailand. Old rain trees grow across the campus, casting shade over courtyards and walkways and offering students refuge from the heat.
