The district was established as an official administrative area in 1908 during comprehensive governmental reforms. This creation reflected broader changes to Thailand's territorial organization in the early 1900s.
The district maintains strong silk production traditions, with local weavers creating textiles that gained international recognition through merchants like Jim Thompson.
The area experiences warm temperatures year-round with cooler nights during winter months. January and February provide the most comfortable conditions for visiting.
The area originated as Mueang Pak during the Ayutthaya period before King Taksin designated it specifically for people from the Vientiane kingdom.
