Bhubing Palace, Royal winter residence in Suthep, Thailand
Bhubing Palace is a royal winter residence in Suthep built against Doi Suthep mountain and featuring multiple buildings with traditional Thai architecture. The complex includes extensive rose gardens distributed throughout the grounds.
The palace was built in 1961 under the direction of Prince Samaichalerm Kridagara and received King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid of Denmark in 1962. These early visits marked the beginning of its use as a royal residence for international guests.
The palace buildings follow the ruean mu architectural style, with elevated structures on stilts separating royal quarters from staff accommodations beneath. This arrangement reflects traditional Thai concepts of social hierarchy and spatial organization.
The palace closes from January to March during royal family visits, so plan accordingly when traveling to the site. Visitors must follow strict dress codes and may only access designated areas within the grounds.
The Suan Suwaree gardens contain temperature-controlled plant species that normally cannot grow in Thailand's tropical climate. These special gardens allow visitors to see flower varieties that would otherwise not thrive in this region.
