Chaophraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital, hospital in Prachinburi , Thailand
Chaophraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital is a public hospital in Tha Ngam, Prachinburi, offering both modern and traditional Thai medicine. On its grounds stands an old Renaissance-style building surrounded by gardens, which houses a museum dedicated to traditional healing.
The main building was constructed in 1909 as a royal residence for King Chulalongkorn, who died before it was finished. It was later turned into a hospital and in the 1960s received its current name in honor of the governor who had funded its construction.
The hospital is one of the few places in Thailand where traditional herbal medicine and Western medicine are practiced side by side. Visitors can try herbal steam baths, traditional massage, and plant-based remedies directly on site.
The grounds are along Prachin Anuson Road and easy to explore on foot, as the museum, gardens, and treatment areas are all close together. Those interested in trying traditional treatments should check in advance whether an appointment is needed.
The building's former pharmacy museum still displays glass jars containing snake venom and preserved scorpions, once used as ingredients in traditional remedies. These items show what was once considered medicine and how ideas about healing have shifted over time.
