Boğaziçi University, Public university in Istanbul, Turkey
Boğaziçi University is a public institution along the Bosphorus in Istanbul, spread across several locations with buildings from different centuries. The main campus sits on a hill overlooking the strait and combines historic architecture with newer teaching facilities.
The institution began in 1863 as Robert College, founded by American educators, and operated as a private school at that time. It passed into state control in 1971 and received its current name, becoming part of the Turkish public higher education system.
English is the language of teaching at this institution, creating an international campus where students from Turkey and many other countries gather. Walking through the grounds, you hear conversations in different languages and see an open academic community in conversation.
The complex stretches along the European shore of the Bosphorus and is most easily reached by public transport, with some campus areas linked by internal shuttle lines. Visitors who want to see the older buildings in the southern section should prepare for stairs and slopes, as the terrain is hilly.
The institution was the first American educational establishment of this kind outside the United States when it opened in the mid-19th century. Some old stone buildings on the southern grounds date back to that founding period and remain in use today.
