Zernek Dam, Rock-fill embankment dam and hydroelectric station in Van Province, Turkey
Zernek Dam is a rock-filled embankment dam with an attached hydroelectric power station on the Hoşap River in Van Province. The structure creates a reservoir that supplies water for both power generation and regional irrigation needs.
Construction took place from 1980 to 1988 as part of eastern Turkey's effort to develop modern infrastructure. The project brought organized water management and power generation to the Van Province region.
The dam infrastructure has changed local agricultural patterns by providing irrigation capabilities to farmers in the surrounding Van Province region.
The site sits roughly 30 kilometers southeast of Van city and is accessible by car from the main roads. Visitors can view the dam structure and reservoir from designated observation points along the embankment.
The dam's interior features a clay core within the rock-fill layers, engineered specifically for the geological conditions of the Hoşap River valley. This layered design prevents water seepage while strengthening the entire structure.
