Colonae, Ancient Greek polis near Lampsacus, Turkey
Colonae is an ancient Greek settlement located on Beşiktepe hill east of Alemşah village in Çanakkale Province. The site contains temple remains, residential structures, and fortification elements spanning from the 7th century BC through later periods.
Milesians established this settlement in the 7th century BC, and it developed into a functioning coastal community. It later became part of the Athenian League, indicating its importance in regional trade and politics.
The residents honored Apollo Killaios in a dedicated temple, following Aeolian Greek religious customs. Religious life shaped the layout of the settlement and left traces in the shrines and ritual objects found across the site.
The terrain is rough with sparse vegetation, so sturdy footwear is advisable for exploring safely. Visit during cooler months when visibility is clearer and archaeological features are easier to spot against the landscape.
In the 4th century BC the city minted its own coins bearing the head of Athena as a sign of independence. These locally produced coins are rare finds today and reveal how the community managed its own economy.
