Yuanlin City, County-administered city in Changhua County, Taiwan
Yuanlin is a county-administered city in eastern Changhua County, Taiwan. The built-up area divides into 40 neighborhoods including Donghe, Minsheng, and Zhongzheng, spreading across roughly 28 square kilometers.
The area changed from woodland into settlement during the Yongzheng era of the Qing dynasty between 1723 and 1735. Clearing the trees allowed farming to develop and drew settlers from other regions.
The name refers to the forests that once covered the area before settlers cleared the land for farming. Today, several temples recall these early agricultural communities and their connection to the soil.
Yuanlin Station sits on an elevated track and links the city to other places in western Taiwan. Most routes within the city can be covered on foot or by local transport.
Local makers process fruit in sugar syrup until candied sweets form, sold in small family businesses. This tradition goes back several generations and ties the city to the orchards of the region.
