Sihcao Wetlands, Protected wetland in Annan District, Tainan, Taiwan.
Sihcao Wetlands is a protected area featuring extensive mangrove forests, salt marshes, and a network of rivers and canals in the Annan District. The site spreads across multiple sections with designated observation platforms positioned to allow views over the water and vegetation.
The area was designated as a protected zone by Tainan City Government in 1994 and later recognized as a wildlife refuge in 2004. These designations reflected growing recognition of its ecological value and need for conservation.
The name refers to four historical villages that once shaped this area, reflecting its ties to local communities. Today, visitors come to observe how resident birds and migratory species use this habitat as a feeding and resting ground throughout the year.
Visitors follow designated walking paths and can observe the wetland from several viewing platforms spread across the site. The best time to visit is during bird migration seasons when more species are active and visible.
The wetlands host around 200 bird species from 49 families, including rare visitors like the black-faced spoonbill and oriental white stork. This high diversity makes it a key destination for birdwatchers traveling through the region.
