Royal Mint, National coinage facility in Llantrisant, United Kingdom
The Royal Mint is a state-owned coinage facility in Llantrisant, South Wales, producing British circulation and commemorative coins. The production buildings stretch across a large industrial site with several manufacturing halls and a visitor center.
The facility began its operations in the late 9th century and relocated its site in 1968 from the Tower of London to South Wales. The move prepared the introduction of the decimal system in British currency.
The mint takes its name from the English monarchs who held the right to produce currency for centuries. Visitors today can see in the experience center how blanks become official currency and which symbols appear on British coins.
Guided tours lead through the production halls and show the individual steps of coin manufacturing. Tickets must be booked in advance as places are limited.
The facility also strikes coins for other countries and produced a special salmon design coin in 2023. Only 200,000 pieces of this 50 pence coin were issued.
