Hugh Town, Administrative center on St. Mary's Island, England
Hugh Town is the administrative center of the Isles of Scilly, stretching across a sandy isthmus that connects The Garrison peninsula to St. Mary's Island. The settlement has harbors on both its northern and southern sides and serves as the main commercial and administrative hub of the islands.
The settlement grew as a trading port serving maritime traffic around England's southwestern coasts. Star Castle was built in 1593 on elevated ground above the village and provided military protection for centuries.
The World Pilot Gig Championships bring teams to St Mary's Pool every May Day bank holiday weekend, continuing the maritime racing tradition.
The main street has shops, restaurants, a post office, and a bank for residents and visitors. The village is compact and easily walkable, though visiting during settled weather and checking tidal conditions helps, as these affect access across the isthmus.
Unlike the rest of Scilly, residents purchased their land as freehold in 1949 while the Duchy of Cornwall retained harbor rights. This divided ownership arrangement makes the village unusual in the islands' history.
