Dagenham, Industrial district in East London, United Kingdom
Dagenham is a district in East London in the United Kingdom with residential neighborhoods, green spaces and former factory buildings along the Thames riverbank. Wide streets run through sprawling estates and past large parks that sit between rows of houses.
The former farming village was mentioned in 687 as Dæccanhaam and remained rural until the 20th century. With the construction of Becontree Estate from 1921 and the opening of the Ford factory, it became a densely populated industrial suburb.
Valence House Museum displays the shift from village to industrial hub through archives and objects spanning several centuries. Visitors see old tools, photographs and items from the daily lives of former residents and workers.
The District Line stops at Dagenham East and Dagenham Heathway stations and connects the area with central London. Buses run through the residential streets and parks scattered across the district.
The Dagenham Girl Pipers were founded in 1930 as the first female bagpipe band and performed at international events. They shaped local identity and remain a symbol of the district's history today.
