Bluestonehenge, Archaeological site in Wiltshire, England.
Bluestonehenge is an archaeological site located one mile southeast of Stonehenge near the River Avon in Wiltshire. The monument comprises stone holes arranged in a circular setting with a surrounding ditch, now mostly buried underground.
Excavations in 2008 and 2009 revealed the stone holes and dated the monument to roughly 5,000 to 4,400 years ago. The findings demonstrate that this location was part of an earlier building phase in the region's sacred landscape.
The site served as a ceremonial stopping point where people paused during ancient ritual journeys. The arrangement of stones shows how this processional way connected different sacred places in the landscape.
The site lies beneath the surface with no visible structures aboveground, making it challenging to understand the archaeological layout without expert guidance. Visiting with a guided tour or having archaeological resources on hand helps clarify what you are seeing and how the buried complex was arranged.
Small fragments of blue stone from Wales were found within the stone settings, revealing an unexpected link to Stonehenge itself. This shared source of stone suggests that prehistoric people undertook remarkable efforts to move materials across considerable distances for their monuments.
