City Hall, Government building in Southwark, London, England
City Hall is a government building on the south bank of the Thames in Southwark with an unusual spherical glass structure. The building spans ten floors and features innovative design that manages sunlight exposure while allowing natural light throughout the interior.
Designed by Norman Foster, the building opened in 2002 as the headquarters of the Greater London Authority. When the authority relocated in 2021, the building began a new chapter serving different municipal functions.
Public exhibitions on the ground floor showcase London's past and present through displays and installations. The upper levels host civic gatherings and community events where residents connect and participate in city life.
The ninth and tenth floors are open to visitors with a viewing gallery and cafe facilities available. Visit on clear days for the best panoramic views across London and the surrounding areas.
The facade was designed with a tilted angle that positions one side toward the sun and turns the other away from direct light. This orientation reduces energy waste while creating varied lighting conditions throughout the building's interior spaces.
