Tower Millennium Pier, pier on the River Thames, in London
Tower Millennium Pier is a river pier on the north bank of the Thames in London, positioned just below Tower Bridge and next to the Tower of London. It serves as a stop on the Thames Clipper network, with boats running east toward Greenwich and west toward Westminster and beyond.
The pier opened in 2000 as part of an effort to improve river connections across London. For a few years after opening, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution operated rescue boats from this location before moving to a different site.
The pier sits beside the Tower of London, and passengers waiting for boats often look up at the old fortress walls just a short walk away. The spot feels like a crossing point between the working river and one of the most visited corners of the city.
Tower Hill underground station and Tower Gateway DLR station are both a short walk away, making the pier easy to reach from most parts of the city. The boarding area is step-free, and tickets for river services can be bought on site before departure.
The pier takes its name from the millennium celebrations of the year 2000, when several new river infrastructure projects were launched across London at the same time. Although it was built primarily for passenger transport, it is also used today for private events and boat parties held on the water.
